Oh My Pie: My Lil' Pie Maker

I am that person in the grocery store taking random pictures with my phone. This time I was minding my own business picking  up groceries for faux Thanksgiving and came across this oddity on an endcap. My Lil' Pie Maker. Oh my. I found this commercial that illuminates just why one needs what appears to be a large silicone cupcake mold and a cookie cutter to make the mini pies of your dreams. Making pies the old fashioned way is for chumps!

Transparent Pie by Boonie Foodie

I featured chocolate variation on chess pie earlier this week and thought I'd continue the trend with this transparent pie, which the Boonie Foodie says is "like chess pie but not". Kate shares her memories of growing up eating food that turned out to be regional (I can relate to that!) and not what every kid in the US grows up eating. Transparent pie is a Kentucky specialty. Unlike chess pie, transparent pie has cream in the filling making it even richer. Kate says the pie is toothachingly sweet, so eat it with some coffee or a tall glass of cold milk.

Caramelized Plums & Chocolate Pie by Biscuits and Such

Baltimore-based food blogger Elena at Biscuits and Such is leaving my fair city and moving to her beloved North Carolina so I thought it was the perfect time to share one of her lovely pies. She organized B'eat More Pie Fest here in Baltimore so she knows her pie! This is a version of chocolate chess pie that she takes to the next level by caramelizing Italian (I'm thinking prune) plums to top the pie. How beautiful those plums look! If you can't find plums, I think caramelizing some pears would work well.

Pastel de Nata by Family Foodie

Ever once in a while I come across a pie that I haven't had before but once I've seen it, I get that "must have it now!" feeling. This is one of those pies. I can't say I've had a lot of Portuguese food but if it is all as tasty as this tart looks, sign me up! I love the look of the creamy custard and the fact that is baked on top of phyllo dough means it is perfect for beginners and people who just don't have the time to fuss with homemade dough. For extra foodie points, you could make your own phyllo dough.

Apple + Cranberry Pie with Cheddar-Cranberry Pie Crust by Coconut & Lime

I realized I didn't share a link to the recipe of the pie I entered in the contest when someone emailed me asking about it. Sorry about that! I've been in a haze of Thanksgiving menu planning and recipe testing.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure who won because the contest ended up being really mismanaged and downright bizarre but I assure you, this pie would be a winner on your table! The filling is very similar to what I would make for a regular apple pie but with a hit of tartness from the cranberries. I've come to realize over the years that I like a crust that is more on the savory side. Sweet crusts are okay, but when combined with a sweet filling it can make the whole dessert too sweet for my tastes. A cheddar-cranberry crust is the perfect solution to that problem.

Pop Pie: Maine Root Pumpkin Pie Soda

I was at Wegmans this weekend and came across this display of Pumpkin pie flavored soda made by Maine Root. I am not a pumpkin pie fan myself but I love made-with-cane-sugar Maine Root so if you are a pumpkin pie lover, it would be worth checking out!

Seafood Pie from the Perfect Pantry

How yummy does this seafood pie from The Perfect Pantry look? I never would have thought of topping shrimp and cod with mashed potatoes but now that I've seen it, it is all I can think of. If you aren't a shrimp or cod person, I bet this would be great with scallops or salmon.

Apple Honey Pie from In the Kitchen with Kath

I'm entering an apple pie contest this week on behalf of the Baltimore Orchard Project, a group that harvests fruit in public parks and private homes and distributes it to those in need, so I've been apple pie crazy!

Kath's pie really stood out to me not only because of her idea of venting the pie with smiley face cut outs but that it used honey in the filling and olive oil in the crust. I can't say I've seen a honey based apple pie before. It sounds like the perfect pie for honey lovers or to serve on Rosh Hashanah. Olive oil based doughs are not only tasty but they tend to roll out really well; a great choice for a double crust pie.

Guinness Steak Pie by Johnny's Kitchen

It is unseasonably chilly here in Baltimore and I don't like it! Normally we have a few more weeks of warm weather but it has been so dreary one scarcely wants to leave the house. However, the nip in the air is the perfect excuse to make some serious comfort food. Johnny of Johnny's Kitchen shared his technique for making Guinness Steak Pie with me and it looks wonderful. I love the idea of topping it with a bit of (pre-made)puff pastry instead of a more time consuming and heavy one. It takes this pie from a weekend-only treat to one you could make every day.

Chicken and Bacon Pot Pie with Sweet Potato Crust by the Runaway Spoon

How autumnal does this look? When I saw this pie on the Runaway Spoon, I knew I had to share it. I'm a sucker for a fancy looking crust and this one isn't just cute, it is sweet potato flavored. Sweet potatoes + chicken + bacon must equal the ultimate fall comfort food. There are instructions in the recipe that tell you how to cook the chicken but I bet you could make this with leftover cooked chicken or cheat and get a rotisserie chicken at the supermarket.

Avocado Pie from Pinch My Salt

Nicole shares a recipe for a pie from her childhood called "frog pie"; a smooth mixture of avocado and sweetened condensed milk in a brown sugar graham cracker crust. I'm insanely jealous she grew up eating this! I swear avocados were not even available in the grocery store when I was growing up, much less making their way into pies.

I love avocados in everything and while I haven't had this pie, I've had avocado shakes before and they were delicious so I know avocados can be very successfully used in desserts.  When I think about how creamy mashed avocados are, I can only imagine how rich and thick the filling must be despite the lack of eggs.
