Butternut Squash Pie with Sorghum Whipped Cream by The Runaway Spoon

The Runaway Spoon is a big butternut squash fan and looking at this pie, I can see why! Similar in texture to pumpkin or sweet potato, butternut squash also makes a great pie filling with its own unique flavor. She includes instructions on how to roast the squash which can be done the day before making the pie.

I have some sorghum in the cabinet I hauled back from Louisiana so I'm excited to see this clever use for it.

Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes by Chocolate Moosey

I came across these cupcake on Google+. When I clicked through and saw that Carla described these cupcakes as tasting like pie crust, I was intrigued. Pie crust cupcakes! Why didn't I think of that? There is pumpkin in the batter and they are topped with whipped cream she cleverly tinted brown. The perfect pie-like addition to your holiday table.

Chocolate-Vietnamese Coffee Tart by Angry Asian Creations

In my family we always serve a chocolate pie at Thanskgiving. It is my brother's favorite, often he has that pie instead of cake for his birthday, and I don't like pumpkin, the more traditional choice. So a good chocolate pie always catches my eye. In this case, we have a tart from Angry Asian Creations. She adapted it from a Bon App├ętit recipe and substituted a graham cracker crust for the one the original recipe called for and I think it was a great move. The graham would contrast nicely with the dark, rich chocolate and the spiced coffee. An ice box pie, this pie would be perfect for Thanksgiving, it needs to set up for at least 8 hours before serving.

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Pie with Praline and Coconut-Pecan Crust by Gluten-Free Goddess

A reader asked if I could find a good gluten-free pumpkin pie for her to make this year. Of course I can! I think Gluten-Free Goddess is one of the best places for gluten-free recipes and I don't think this pie would disappoint. It has a coconut pecan crust and is topped with praline. The vegan filling is made creamy yet firm with the addition of cashew cream and coconut milk.

I can't imagine anyone would miss wheat in this pie!

Ginger Spice Sweet Potato Pie by Me!

It has been a week of sickness at the Rappaport house. Not fun but hopefully, we'll feel better before Thanksgiving! My mom is making two pies this year so I want to be able to enjoy that.

First,  I wanted to share an early recipe from Coconut & Lime for a sweet potato pie with a ginger-y twist. It is an awesome alternative to pumpkin pie while still feeling festive and autumnal.

Peanut Butter Honeycomb Pie by Prevention RD

I knew I had to feature this pie once I saw it required you to make your own honeycomb candy. Honeycomb really isn't too difficult to make (If somewhat dramatic. Spoiler alert: it involves sudden foaming) and it tastes like crispy caramel. Honeycomb and honeycomb related treats like Australia's Violet Crumble bar are oddly under utilized here in the US which is a bit of a puzzler because 1. they are delicious and 2. it is candy. Americans love candy!

I'm trying to bring honeycomb to our shores one recipe at a time. Pairing it with what I think is one of  if not the most popular American flavors, peanut butter, is the perfect way to do that. The familiar and the novel all in one pie. Plus I think the creamy peanut butter would be a wonderful texture contrast with the crisp honeycomb.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Chess Pie by Love and Olive Oil

Yes, I know. Another chess pie. Given the frequency I've been coming across and posting about chess pies, I'm becoming convinced that there is some sort of chess pie fever going on. This one looks really good, though, it combines best buds chocolate and peanut butter to make something that looks pretty darn special without being too tricky to make. There is a peanut butter layer and what Lindsay describes as a "brownie batter" layer of chocolate on top. Perfect for a brownie lover or a peanut butter lover or anyone who loves over-the-top, rich desserts. Plus it is a great excuse to break out that springform pan you didn't know what to do with.

Jam Filled Hand Pies by Not Derby Pie

If you read Coconut & Lime you know I have a serious addiction to canning. I make tons of jam and pickles each year and have a whole free standing cabinet in my already cramped dining room devoted to what I can. What you might not know is that I don't actually eat jam that much. I don't eat it on toast, don't eat PB & J(am) sandwiches and while I like the idea of it swirled into yogurt, I generally get those Fage yogurt cups with the fruit well at Costco and eat those instead. But I like to make jam. A lot. So what I do is search for non sandwich, non yogurt and non toast ways to use up what seems like the billion of jars of jam I'm hoarding.

Enter the jam filled hand pie. Perfectly sized for one, and as Rivka says, no worries about runny filling or soggy crusts, jam hand pies are the solution to my problem. I bet they freeze well too.

Sweet Potato Buttermilk Pie by the Novice Chef

I don't eat nearly enough sweet potatoes. I know they are better for you than regular potatoes and packed with vitamins and such but I just can't get into them as a side dish. I like to keep sweets out of my main meals in firmly in dessert. Luckily they are perfection in a tin when baked into a pie. This recipe starts off with steamed potatoes and then makes a custard out of them using buttermilk which I imagine adds a delicious tang to the filling. She then folds in egg whites which lighten the texture. The perfect alternative to pumpkin pie!

Savory Fig and Grape Tart by Kitchen Confidante

I am always amazed at how creative and beautiful some of the pies I come across are. How much patience must you have to layer so many figs and grapes in such an elegant pattern? More than I have, surely. Luckily this tart is as easy to make as it is lovely. The crust is puff pastry and it is topped with goat cheese and then the figs and grapes are arranged on top. A tart that is simple and impressive? Count me in.

Pumpkin Spice Ice Box Pie by Scoop Adventures

Lindsay over at Scoop Adventures is a genius with ice cream (the classic partner of many a pie) and I am a huge fan of ice box pies so I was excited to see a recipe on her site that combined the two. I love how she used spice cookies to make the crumb crust instead of the more common graham crackers. How much flavor that must add! I also like how she doesn't use pumpkin pie spice (you know how I feel about that) but instead a mix of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup in the creamy pumpkin filling.

I think this would be the perfect pie for Thanksgiving since it can be made the day before with no ill effects.

Honey Apple Pie Pop Tarts by One Hungry Mama

Stacie of One Hungry Mama calls these pop tarts but we hungry pie fans know what they really are: hand pies! I have to say, I love hand pies. Not the packaged kind you find in gas stations so much but good, homemade hand pies are a work of art. They pack all of the deliciousness of a pie in a neat(ish), convenient package that, as Stacie points out, can be popped into a lunch bag or even the freezer for future consumption. Who wouldn't want a stash of homemade hand pies waiting for you whenever you got a yen? No one I'd like to know.

What really sets these particular hand pies apart is the glaze. I see so many hand pie recipes that skip the glaze and it is a true shame. It adds a bit of crackly sugary pop similar to coating you find on the aforementioned gas station pies but so much better.

Mini Raw Banana Caramel Cream Pies by Fragrant Vanilla Cake

As you might have surmised by my postings thus far, I do not follow any sort of raw diet. Yet, when I came across this recipe on Fragrant Vanilla Cake, I couldn't wait to share it. A raw pie! And not raw in the "waiting to be baked" way but an actual supposed to be raw pie. Amy accomplishes this by topping a cashew coconut base with creamy beaten bananas and almond date maple caramel sauce and then piping on coconut filled vanilla cream. Wow! Who says raw food can't be decadent?

Southern Chocolate Pie with Coconut Whipped Cream by Urban Scared Garden

I've noticed an inadvertent theme to several of this week's pie posts: Southern pies! This chocolate pie was made by Jessica of Urban Sacred Garden who I had the good fortune to meet earlier this year at FoodBlog South. She originally made it for a Oscar party representing Minny's chocolate pie from The Help and judging from the comments she overheard, it was a winner. I love that is is topped by coconut whipped cream, coconut and chocolate is one of my favorite combinations but I know coconut can be polarizing so anyone who is a coconutaphobe can just leave it off.

Banoffee Pie by Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice

Banoffee Pie is practically the official (sweet) pie of England. When I first mentioned starting a pie blog, a friend of ours in England said I absolutely must find a recipe for banoffee to share. I take my orders seriously so I've been on the look out for the ultimate banoffee pie. I think I found it at Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice. A decadent mix of banana and cream topped with toffee this version is over-the-top with deliciousness.
